What to Wear to a Bridal Shower, Rehearsal Dinner or Bachelorette

Table of Contents

If you are the bride, this is your white moment. The bridal shower, the rehearsal dinner and the bachelorette are the three occasions where wearing white is not only allowed but expected. If you are a guest, wear color or print and leave the white, ivory and cream to her.

Here is how we dress all three at Signature Edit, our boutique on Wisconsin Avenue in upper Northwest Washington, with notes on what actually works for DC venues and DC weather.

Can the bride wear white to her own bridal shower?

Yes. White is the convention for the bride at every pre-wedding event, and most hosts and photographers expect it. The only thing to avoid is a dress so bridal that it competes with the wedding gown itself, which is why lace sundresses, ivory midis and white two-pieces work better here than anything with a train or a veil-length silhouette.

What to wear to a bridal shower

Showers in Washington are usually daytime and semi-formal: a garden in Kalorama, a rooftop, a private room over brunch in Georgetown, a family house in Chevy Chase or Bethesda. You want a dress you can sit in for two hours and open gifts in, in a fabric that breathes.

What to wear to the rehearsal dinner

The rehearsal dinner is the dressiest of the three. It is almost always evening, usually a restaurant or private dining room, and it is the first time both families see you together. Go longer, go sleeker, and let the shower be the softer, more romantic look.

What to wear to a bachelorette

There are two versions of this in DC, and they need different wardrobes.

The destination weekend. Charleston, Nashville, Cabo, Miami, or a house on the Eastern Shore. Pack pieces that work wet or dry and travel without creasing: a kaftan or cover-up, the Lace The Label Ioli Dress ($600) for lunch, and the Charo Ruiz Iraso Long Dress in cream botanic ($699) for the one nice dinner.

The night out in the city. Shorter, more structured, and something you can stand up in all evening. The Azulu Zelda Dress in sculptural linen ($480) is the easiest version of this, or build a look from matching sets.

If you are a guest, not the bride

One rule: no white, no ivory, no cream, and nothing that reads as white in photographs. Beyond that, match the formality of the invitation and let the bride be the lightest thing in the room.

Three things we tell every DC bride

Choose natural fibers. Washington humidity between June and September is not survivable in polyester. Cotton voile, linen and silk photograph better and hold their shape through an outdoor afternoon.

Plan for a twenty-degree swing. Spring and fall events here start warm and end cold. A light kimono or cover-up in your bag is the difference between staying and leaving early.

Wear a block heel. Garden showers in Kalorama, rooftops in Navy Yard and lawns on the Eastern Shore all punish a stiletto.

    Frequently asked questions

Can a guest wear white to a bridal shower?

No. White, ivory and cream are reserved for the bride at every pre-wedding event. Choose color, print or a soft neutral like blush, sage or navy instead.

Does the bride have to wear white to her shower?

She does not, but it is the expectation, and it makes her instantly identifiable in photographs. An ivory or white-based print is a good compromise if head-to-toe white feels like too much.

How dressy is a rehearsal dinner?

One notch below the wedding itself. If the wedding is black tie, the rehearsal dinner is cocktail. If the wedding is cocktail, the rehearsal dinner is smart daytime. The venue on the invitation tells you more than the dress code does.

What should the bride wear to her bachelorette?

Something she would not wear to the wedding weekend: shorter, easier and more fun. White still signals that she is the bride, but a linen mini or a two-piece set reads far less formal than lace.
